The Stonington Free Library mourns the passing of Elizabeth “Beth” Harding of Mystic, CT, on April 3, 2025.
Beth was a devoted friend, supporter, and volunteer leader of the Stonington Free Library. She served as President of the Board of Trustees in the early 2000s. Known for her quiet but firm leadership, Beth became president at a time when board meetings were accompanied by a bucket to capture water leaking into the building, and for many years plans for repair were neglected for lack of funding. In 2004, she organized and led a capital campaign which raised the funds needed to repair the roof and bring other improvements to the library.
Beth generously used her skills and experience as a successful and highly respected development officer at MIT to transform SFL’s fundraising efforts. She reorganized the Annual Fund drive and set ambitious goals that exceeded previous levels. Beth had a knack and very light touch. She didn’t pressure potential donors but presented all with an opportunity to participate in an important community effort. More often than not, her light asks were positively received and resulted in generous gifts.
Along with fundraising, Beth recognized the value and importance of “friend raising.” On the suggestion of Ruth Saunders, Beth, Ruth and several others, established SFL’s first Mystery Dinner. The event continues today as the Library’s primary fund and friend-raising event. To celebrate the successful completion of the 2004 Capital Drive, Charles and Beth organized a “Whoop Dee Do” fun fair on the Village Square. Her commitment to the Library’s mission and her passion for its role in the community were always evident.
Her service to the Library extended beyond her tenure on the Board of Trustees. She remained a gracious host for many Mystery Dinners and was always helpful in making sure guests and hosts were well matched. Beth and Charles were also key participants in the more recent effort to implement the strategic plan SFL adopted. Charles crafted a powerful case statement and Beth organized donor lists and called on many donors to assure that the campaign exceeded its goal.
We who had the honor of serving with Beth and working with her will forever remember her kind manner and are grateful for her friendship, leadership and guidance. Beth’s positive impact on the SFL will be enjoyed and benefit our community for many years. Elizabeth Harding will be missed.
