Steve Telsey discusses Nautical Terms

Steve Telsey is a long time volunteer at the Mystic Seaport Museum and local fire departments. A native of Mamaroneck, NY, he grew up sailing on Long Island Sound. After obtaining his 100-ton US Coast Guard Auxiliary Sail, Steve worked his way up from volunteer to captain of the Hudson River sloop Clearwater. He taught celestial navigation and other topics aboard schooners such as the Harvey Gamage before settling ashore. Steve combines his background in English and his love of everything nautical to explain how terms that have become mainstream may have deep origins in 18th and 19th century seafaring.
