Sunday Evening Lecture – Tolly Boatwright “Imperial Women of Rome” at the La Grua Center

September 8, 2019 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Tolly Boatwright is Professor in the Department of Classical Studies at Duke University,
where she has taught for 40 years. Her education began at the Boro School and Mystic
Junior High. Her love of Latin was first kindled at Pine Point and nurtured more at WMI,
now The Williams School. She works on Roman history and Latin historiography. Her
books include Peoples of the Roman World, Hadrian and the City of Rome, and (as co-
author) two Roman history textbooks. Her articles such as “Women and Gender in the
Forum Romanum” and “Just Window Dressing? Imperial Women as Architectural
Sculpture” explore the lives and roles of Roman women. For the last few years she has
been happily at work on Imperial Women of Rome: Power, Gender, Context (under
contract with Oxford University Press), from which comes today’s talk.
