SUMMARY:Let's Build It! Program at the Stonington COMO
DESCRIPTION:Historic Stonington and the Stonington Como are partnering on a family program called “Build Stonington” led by architect Steven Schwarz\, AIA. Schwarz has piloted this program in several other communities including Rye and Bronxville\, New York. He has built streetscapes of the Washington Mall and Vatican City out of Legos and we are excited he is coming here to Stonington. This year’s map will focus on the Borough of Stonington and we have tentative plans to expand this in coming years to the Pawcatuck-Westerly area and Mystic Bridge.  This event will offer 50 teams the opportunity to construct historic landmarks out of Legos and to place them on a giant streetscape map of Stonington. Teams will pay a nominal fee and will build their structures on site at the Como on November 2nd from 1-5pm. To get a team together\, visit the COMO website for tickets! Stonington Free Library is proud to be a co-sponsor of this fun family event.

SUMMARY:Madagascar - A Journey to the Red Island
DESCRIPTION:Amanda Martin currently serves as the Director of Programming and Training with Peace Corps in Madagascar\, where she has worked since 2022. She has three decades of international development experience. She holds two master’s degrees in social work and Public Health\, and a certificate in peace and conflict resolution. She is a Rotary Peace Fellow. She served as the director of three non-profit organizations (focused on human rights and public health). She served as a Peace Corps Volunteer (Guatemala)\, an English teacher in China\, worked for human rights organizations in Colombia and Guatemala\, and created a public health college for adult refugee students from Myanmar\, in a refugee camp on the Thailand/Myanmar border. Amanda worked in Bolivia for nine years as the director of a public health non-profit organization. Her hobbies include travel\, hiking\, cycling\, writing\, reading\, swimming\, and spending time in nature. Her passion is working with women and adolescent girls’ empowerment projects.
