Heifer International

As part of the Summer Reading Program, the Stonington Free Library participates in Heifer International's www.heifer.org "Read-to-Feed" program by donating one nickel (5¢) for each 15 minutes a child reads. The Summer Reading Program 2007 raised enough money to purchase a water buffalo, a hive of bees and a flock of chickens. Thank you for reading!

What is Heifer International?

Heifer International works to end world hunger and save the earth through the gift of farm animals and training. For close to 60 years, Heifer has helped well over four million impoverished families in 128 countries lift themselves out of poverty and achieve self-reliance.

Instead of providing families in need with a non-renewable source of food, Heifer International provides a "living loan" of an animal and extensive training in animal care, community development and earth-friendly farming practices. The family's health and standard of living improves by the many benefits their animal can provide-milk, eggs, wool, fertilizer, draft power, etc.

A key cornerstone of Heifer International is "passing on the gift." Families who receive an animal repay the loan by passing on one or more of the animal's female offspring to other families in need. These families in turn pass on the gift to another family. So one gift multiplies throughout the community.
