Family
Literacy & Enrichment Program (FLEP)
The
Stonington Free Library Outreach Program has been in operation since 1995.
Each month a storyteller visits 14 sites reaching over 500 preschool children
in daycare centers, nursery schools, special needs classes and Headstart
to tell stories, read books, sing songs and do fingerplays, flannelboard
storytelling, puppetry and creative drama. She also delivers to each center
a crate of 80 children's books which is rotated once each month and a
set of Parenting books. The Child Centers in turn check out the books
to the children and their parents.
FLEP's mission is:
- to introduce pre-school
children and their parents to the joys and values of literature and
reading.
- to provide books for the
children to take home and share the experience with parent(s) &
caregivers.
- to foster family literacy
and togetherness in the home.
- to encourage families to
read together.
- to prepare children for
Kindergarten.
